Journalism: a Living Tool to End Inequalities and Fraudulent Activities!!!

👉Health Newspaper, Investigation team Reveals: What a Disrespectful MD At Keystone Bank?

The Sierra Leone print media have often been bashed by officials in both the public and private sectors for not crosschecking stories that affect their institutions before going to press.

This is the general perception of most of these public and private sector officials, especially those who, for whatever reason(s), loathe the media through and through.

Despite conscious efforts by journalists to crosscheck their information on professional grounds before going to press, their efforts are being frustrated by some arrogant, loud and aggressive executive officials who become jittery over the press because they have skeletons in their cupboards which they always hide from the general public.

In this edition, we carried a story on Keystone Bank with regards its treatment of eight members of staff it accused of conniving to defraud the Bank.

The Bank Management consequently reported the matter to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters in Freetown and suspended the workers without pay pending investigation.

To cut matter short, the eight staff members (suspects) spent four days in police custody before they were granted bail with stiff conditions after investigation proved that they had no hands in what the Bank Management accused them of.

They took the matter to the Ministry of Labour and Social Security and when their employer was directed to pay their salaries, revoke their suspension letters, among others, the Bank Management refused to honour the directives of the Labour Ministry. It was against the backdrop of their defiance in honouring the directives that we went to crosscheck with the Managing Director of Keystone Bank, Mr. Collins, who, I’m told, is Nigerian national.

After we had asked Mr. Collins for clarification on the matter his Management has with its suspended eight workers who have still not been paid as directed by the Ministry of Labour, he sheepishly, arrogantly had the temerity to demand that we divulge our source to him; otherwise, he would not speak to us.

When we told him it was very unprofessional or unethical for any journalist to disclose or divulge his/her source, Mr. Collins grew extremely furious and started lashing at us if though we had no right to crosscheck with him with regards the inhuman treatment the Bank Management has meted out to eight its Sierra Leonean employees.

He arrogantly walked out of the bank building as though he was dealing with lepers he would not touch or listen to.

Be that as it may, it is rather sad that some of the foreign commercial banks operating in the country have foreign staffs that do not undergo standard orientation or induction before they ferried into this country.

Given the academic standard of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, we expect every educated adult in that country to respect the role of the media as partners in development in any corporate democratic setup.

But it is rather disgraceful that the myopic Nigerian Managing Director of Keystone Bank does not have any iota of respect for the Fourth Estate and would therefore prefer to treat journalists or the media with disdain. Who does Collins think he is to treat the media with disrespect? What balderdash!

Now it has dawned on us that the Managing Director of the Bank loathes the media for whatever reason(s), we will take him for what he is – an arrogant, loud, aggressive and selfish banker that does not care for the welfare of workers.

We therefore promise to continue pursuing the matter of the eight marginalized workers until the right thing is done.
