Veteran sport commentator boost Journalists

As part of his quest to give back to sport journalism, veteran commentator, Unisa Deen Kargbo who is also, a renowned sport administrator at the National Olympic Committee has on Friday 20th February 2020 delivered football commentary training to eight Journalists from both the print and electronic media within the Western and Northern Province of Sierra Leone.


The training was hosted at the 3rd floor of the National Stadium Hostels in Freetown and covered the basic tips about doing good football commentary and how to become a football commentator?

The two hours long training according to the trainer, Unisa Deen Kargbo, “is very meaningful, educative and interactive for the participants despite it was seemingly a refreshers training for sport journalists that have participated from previous trainings organized by the leading sports association for journalists in the country (Sport Writer Association of Sierra Leone) and a new dawn to beginners and lovers of football commentary.

I’m pleased with the responses from the trainees they were very proactive throughout the training and has made very strong commitments to use the training knowledge to improve on their work as football commentators,” he concludes.

One of the trainees is Morlai Kargbo, a football commentator and journalist that works for News watch Newspaper in Freetown, who on behalf of his colleagues expressed thanks and appreciation to the trainer, Unisa Deen Kargbo for organizing such training. He urged others to grab such opportunities to be trained whenever the need arise.

“For me, I’m ready to correct the many mistakes I’ve made at several football commentaries previously, this training has sharpen my lenses on how to dispense my duties as a commentator, differ to being a co-commentator or an analyst as the case may be.” He told Northern Times.

The training was climaxed with a statement from Eric Fomba, the Public Relations officer at the Ministry of Sports, who appealed to the trainees to create the much expected differences in delivering their functions as football commentators and as professionals in their works as sports journalists to report on all sides of stories they pursue and to always feel free to contact him on matters related to his the ministry where he is still a volunteer for the growth and developments of sports in the country.

Sierra Leone, Two other Nations disqualified from AFCON 2024 U17 Qualifiers
