Over Faceless Strike Allegations, Police Arrests and detained Makeni, Lunsar suspects

By: Alusine Rehme Wilson

Unconfirmed number of suspects believed to have been arrested in Lunsar have joined other Makeni suspects in detention at the Mena Police station on Mena Hills over allegations of aiding and abetting behind the scenes to fuel the flames for the most talked about faceless citizens strike against the Government.

Popular Motor Drivers Union member “Kabila,” radio-texter “Santos Maria” and others were arrested by the Sierra Leone Police in Makeni Sunday evening and detained at the Mena Police Station but Police has refrained from commenting on the reasons for their arrests.

On a Monday morning follow up at the Mena Police station, I learned that other suspects arrested in Lunsar have been brought in and detained but the Police were still tight lipped to confirm.

While trying to leave the station, I heard a voice calling me from one offices at the Mena Police station, it was freelance and radio-texter Mahamoud Fofana who was in the said office together with Amid Turay, the President of the Bombali Texters Union who’ve were there to visit one of their members“Santos Maria” in detention.

I briefly greeted them, and saw “Santos Maria” and “Kabila” looking downed, I asked them quickly why were you both arrested? They replied saying the Police say they’re under arrest over suspicion to have championed and printed over 2000 t-shirts to be supplied to Youth and other protesters in Makeni to put on in uniformity while taking up to the streets to demonstrate against the Government of Sierra Leone in a purported faceless strike.

But they(the Police) have conducted forensic searches in our dwellings but didn’t fine any t-shirts printed as they alleged but we were still been brought here together with others and destined, they explained.

I also asked them if they’re in anyway planning to take part in the faceless strike action, they denied of having such intentions in their reply, adding “we just don’t know what kind of bad luck that has befall us to be arrested for what we don’t know about, but thanks be to God that we are not the only ones being arrested in Makeni, “some other suspects on similar allegations from Lunsar have also been brought in just now while we are still being abandoned by the Police who are not saying anything to us.”

Responding to me on WhatsApp, Sergeant John Abass Kamara, the Northeastern region Head of Police Media said he is “not in Makeni at the moment and connected therefore comment on the Makeni arrests, Kamara also declined to confirm the arrests being made in Lunsar saying the area is not under his jurisdiction.”
