In Bombali District… NaCCED AND PARTNERS CONDUCT CIVICS TEACHERS TRAINING OF TRAINERS

By: Amadu Wurie Timbo

Hosted at the Sierra Leone Teachers Union hall in Makeni, Northern Sierra Leone, the National Council for Civic Education and Development (NaCCED) in collaboration with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary School (MBSS), the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) and the Sierra Leone Free Education Project on Sunday 27th November 2022 ended a two-day National Civics training of trainers for teachers in Bombali District.

The event brought together over 104 selected teachers from approved Primary and Secondary schools from all chiefdoms across the Bombali District, including facilitators.

The 104 Teachers were offered the chance to learn a number of topics including Brainstorming on the Civics Syllabus implementation guides, presentation and discussion on the justification and general learning outcomes of civic and the civic education in Sierra Leone, discussion and group work on the methodology of teaching civics in schools and some others.

Mr. Sheiku James is the Curriculum Development Officer at the National Council for Civic Education and Development. He said the event was a part of NaCCED journey in reintroducing the far gone civics in the country’s educational curriculum with the move to train about one thousand teachers nationwide.

He told Journalists that MBSS has approved to include civics in the 2022/2023 academy year and have so far succeeded to print civic text books for primary and Junior Secondary School levels. He emphasized that the new subject may pose challenges for teachers in transmitting knowledge to pupils and therefore requires effective training in order to actualize their dream in converting the thinking, behaviour and attitudeof Sierra Leoneans to a better way through civics education in schools.

Speaking on behalf of participants, Mrs Mariatu Suzan Bantin, a secondary school teacher, working with the Makeni Comprehensive Academy told Journalists that the reintroduction of civics in schools will help brick unnecessary conflicts being caused by thoughtless individuals, earning them with high standard focus that will broaden their thinking to nationalism.

She confirmed that the workshop has helped them to understand many methods they should use to teach Civics, ranging from demonstrational method, discussion method, field trip method, role play and others which she assured to implement at school, home and community to ensure that the Government dream to changing citizens mind-set to a healthier way is fully achieved.
