Arm Rubbers Harass and Kill “Okada-man” in Makeni, stimulate Massive Protests

By: alusinerehme.wilson@awokonewspaper.sl
Since the early morning of yesterday, Commercial Moto Bike Riders in Makeni have been busy storming main streets in the municipality and its environs protesting over the death of one of their 30-year-old commercial bilk rider colleague who’s alleged to have been harassed and stabbed to death on Sunday night at Conteh Street in Makeni, Northern Sierra Leone.

Hundreds of Bike Riders first converged at Conteh Street where the remains of their late colleague alleged to have been attacked, stabbed and killed by unknown arm rubbers were left unattended.

Angrily, the Bike riders then took the remains of their colleague to his resident at the Magbenteh community, informed the deceased relatives while others have already stormed the center business area of the city as well as other areas around Conteh streets where they stopped movements of other road users in protest of their colleague’s tragedy.

About 15 minutes later, the protest caught the attention of the Sierra Leone Police who dispatched their personnel to the various areas where the Bike riders had stormed.

The police then joined hands with the bike riders and took the corpse of the “Okada man” to the Makeni Mortuary where the corpse is said to be examined and arranged for onward burial in the coming days. While the corps was at the mortuary, another group of Bike riders attacked dwellings alleged to be the hideouts of robbers located near the area where the dead-body of their companion was found.

They pelted stones and made an attempt to burn down those premises but enjoined efforts by Executive members of the Bombali District Bike Riders Association and the Police to prevent further damages while money doubling materials were discovered in one of the houses attacked.

However, the District Spokesman for the Bike Riders Association in Bombali, Ishmael Dumbuya has on behalf of their membership expressed great concerns over their membership in security while rendering commercial bike riding services to the residents of the municipality and its environs but has called on the Sierra Leone Police in the North East Division to speedily look into the outburst and bring to book alleged perpetrators while appended eventually.

“In as much as we are disappointed about the negligence from residents that have repeatedly refused to come to our membership rescue while under attack, I’m calling on my fellow riders to stay calm and allow the police to speedily investigate and bring to book collaborators and perpetrators of the rampant attack on our membership.” Concluded Dumbuya.

Meanwhile, the Sierra Leone Police North East Region Division has acknowledged there have been rampant attack on bike riders and as of last Saturday three bikes were stolen out of four bike riders that were on the same day attacked, we are still investigating and for this issue we want the bike riders to show respect for the law, allow us to do our work and not to take it into their own hands.

“For now we will not speak further on this matter but I can confirm that this very house attacked by the Bike riders we’ve also raided repeatedly and have found money laundry materials and even made some arrest the last time we raided this same venue but the community people are also not helping the situation by helping us with intelligence when strange faces surface in this area which we have repeatedly received complained of broad day as well as night arm robbery attacks, a police personnel whispered at the said premise which is located at the Back of Ansarul Islamic Secondary School in Makeni.
