Heavy rainfall, storm and Flooding in Makeni destroys scores of houses and properties

By: Alusine Rehme Wilson

The Makeni municipality and its environs has been hard hit again by heavy rainfall and storm resulting to a number of houses and properties being destroyed to flooding which erupted on the early morning hours of Tuesday, June 28, 2022.

It is the third time since April that the northeastern region city and its environs is been badly hit by the dangers of heavy rainfall and storm, the last two occurred in the first week of April and on the eve of this year’s pray day with over hundreds casualties including roofs of schools, dwelling house and shops been flown away by the breeze been reported earlier.

The latest heavy rainfall and storm caused countless loss and destruction of valuable properties and houses on strategic locations near the central business area of Makeni, swampy areas and its environs.

Kabala highway, Lower John Street, Station road, Mabanta road, Magburaka road, Rogbaneh road, Masuba, Talent town, Makama, Mabanta and the OIC community make up the list of areas that were badly affected by day’s flooding.

Some shops on Rogbaneh road, Mabanta road and lower John Street had to empty their stores on Tuesday morning when the raid had seized to bail out flooded water from their shops and to separate properties destroyed from the others, while residents from some of the other communities affected were forced to spend sleepless night bailing out the water from inside their houses and relocating their properties to safe spaces except for others whose dwelling houses were completely destroyed by the flooding.

It’s believed by most residents whose areas were not hit by the flooding who were interviewed by Awoko Newspaper on Tuesday afternoon that, the flooding would had been prevented if the Makeni city council, Ministry of Lands, local stakeholders, the Environment Protection Agency and other related line ministries would have teamed up to prevent the rampant construction of permanent structures in swampy areas as well as along main streets near drainages.”

There have been no support yet for the affected families since the flooding destructions were noticed and except for the Sierra Leone Road Authority-(SLRA) with funding from the National Mineral Agency-(NMA) that are on a damage control thread currently spotted by Awoko Newspaper clearing drainages along the affected places.

Sierra Leone, Two other Nations disqualified from AFCON 2024 U17 Qualifiers

By: Abdulrahman Barrie The U17 football teams from Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Guinea Bissau have been disqualified from the 2024 U17 African Cup of Nations competition in Senegal after failing the mandatory MRI test scans. These scans, which determine the age of the players, revealed discrepancies that led to their removal from the tournament. The disqualification follows changes to Article 27.4 of the U17 Africa Cup of Nations regulations, which have tightened the criteria and enforcement of age verification measures. The updated rules stipulate that if a team has more than four players deemed ineligible after the MRI eligibility test, the entire team will be disqualified. The MRI tests, used to enforce age restrictions in youth competitions, are crucial for ensuring fairness. Unfortunately, the teams from these three nations did not meet the age criteria, resulting in their disqualification. This decision has come as a significant disappointment for the young players and their fans, w...
