Minority Rights Retreat Gets Underway for Activists, Journalists

By: Alusine Rehme Wilson The Media Reform Coordinating Group (MRCG) Sierra Leone, in collaboration with its international partner Minority Rights Group International and with support from the European Union, has initiated a three-day intensive retreat in the Southern regional city of Bo. This retreat is focused on educating and empowering activists and journalists in Sierra Leone to understand and effectively report on Minority Rights Issues (MRI). The retreat began on Monday, September 11 and is scheduled to conclude on Wednesday, September 13, as stated by project officer Patricia Sankoh. The activists and journalists in this retreat are a select group of journalists and activists who have been actively engaged in reporting and advocating for MRI-related issues in various communities across Sierra Leone's six regions. MRCG, MoICE reviews Draft National Media and Information Policy

​ The  Media Reform Coordinating Group (MRCG) in partnership with the Ministry of Information and Civic Education (MoICE) has on Thursday, 7th September, 2023, convened a workshop at Dohas Hotel in Bo, to examine the draft National Media and Information Policy.  The event brought together a distinguished gathering of key figures from Sierra Leone's media landscape including, the Right to Access Information Commission, the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists, Women in the Media Sierra Leone, the Independent Media Commission and among others.  Dr. Francis Sowa, the National Coordinator of MRCG, emphasized that the document presented is not a policy they have developed but rather a compilation of discussions on key issues that could inform future policy decisions.  He highlighted that the government has its own established process for policy development. Former Sierra Leone U15 skipper earns historic call up

By: Alusine Rehme Wilson Sallieu Bah, the talented 17-year-old footballer from Makeni, Sierra Leone, is set to make a historic senior national team debut for the Leone Stars. He received a call-up to the national team on Wednesday evening after being included in Sierra Leone’s 23-man squad by Head Coach John Edward Keister. This achievement makes Bah the second teenager in Sierra Leonean football history to receive such an honor, following in the footsteps of Mohamed Kallon. Bah's journey to the senior national team has been marked by dedication and hard work. He expressed his joy at seeing his name on the final squad list on the SLFA Facebook page, describing it as a dream come true. A2ESL doles out lofty educational succour for Ebola orphans in Bombali

By: Alusine Rehme Wilson Access to Education Sierra Leone (A2ESL) is a commendable organization led by Honorable Mohamed Papa Bangura of Bombali District, Sierra Leone. Since 2015, they have been tirelessly advocating for and financially supporting Ebola orphans and vulnerable children in the region. Earlier today, at the Masuba community center A2ESL conducted its annual Back to School program, which aimed to provide significant educational support to ninety Ebola victims from various villages in Bombali District, including Pate Bana, Masuba, and Makeni. The educational support included a range of essential items such as cash assistance, school uniforms, books, pens, shoes, and backpacks. These items were distributed to students attending primary, junior, and secondary schools in the region. Many of these students have received similar support from the organization in the past.
