By: Alusine Rehme Wilson
The stage for an exciting revival of the Sports Writers Makeni Mayoral Trophy has been set following a successful meeting between representatives of the Sports Writers Association of Sierra Leone (SWASAL)-Northern Region Branch and the Mayor of the Makeni City Council, Abubakarr Lamtales Kamara. The meeting held at the Mayor’s pallor in Makeni city, Northern province of Sierra Leone on Tuesday has ignited anticipation for an exhilarating revival of the Sports Writers Makeni Mayoral event. During the meeting, His Worship Abubakarr Lamtales Kamara who succeeds Mayor Sunkarie Kabba Kamara assured his fullest cooperation for the revamp and sustainability of the Sports Writers Makeni Mayoral Trophy after five year hiatus. He expressed excitement about all the good work the association has been doing and is equally pleased with the idea and the long standing partnership between the Makeni City Council and the Sports Writers Association in the North which he promises to solidify the collaboration to infuse fresh energy into the sports scene, fostering camaraderie and celebrating athletic excellence. Mayor Lamtales went on to confirm on behalf of the Makeni city council that they will continue with this initiative, and promised to inform the Chief Administrator and other council staff about the upcoming another meeting with SWASAL North over the trophy’s second edition. On their part, Alfred Zico Kabia, the Acting Organizing Secretary of SWASL North, said: “the Sports Writers Makeni Mayoral Trophy is an annual non-political championship that unites communities and has previously produced players who now compete in top leagues both nationally and internationally. “The inaugural edition of Sports Writers Makeni Mayoral Trophy took place in 2018, under the leadership of former SWASAL North Chairman Sheku Saccoh Turay and former Mayor Sunkaria Kabba Kamara, with support from then Chief Administrator Willam Alpha. “But after the first edition that featured 16 teams ended successfully five years ago, challenges such as the outbreak of COVID-19 and the former mayor’s extensive medical and work-related travels saw the tournament not being held. “For the second edition and beyond, SWASAL North hopes to promote soccer, showcase talent, empower sports enthusiasts, enhance community compliance, and boost revenue generation for Makeni City Council through the Sports Writers Makeni Mayoral Trophy,” he further remarked.

These scans, which determine the age of the players, revealed discrepancies that led to their removal from the tournament. The disqualification follows changes to Article 27.4 of the U17 Africa Cup of Nations regulations, which have tightened the criteria and enforcement of age verification measures. The updated rules stipulate that if a team has more than four players deemed ineligible after the MRI eligibility test, the entire team will be disqualified.
