Sierra Leone outshines Senegal 1-0 to win first-ever WAFU A' Women's Cup

By: Alusine Rehme Wilson

Saturday night saw history made as the Sierra Leone Women's Senior National Team (Sierra Queens) clinched their first-ever West Africa Football Union (WAFU) ‘A’ Women’s Cup title, defeating hosts Senegal 1-0 in a crunch final.

The tightly contested encounter, held in Senegal, featured a goalless first half as both teams displayed strong defensive discipline and intensity.

However, it was Sierra Leone who showed greater composure and determination in the second half.

Under the guidance of coach Hassan Malik Zenette Mansaray, the Sierra Queens remained resolute, thwarting multiple attempts from the Senegalese side thanks to a well-coordinated defense and an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Hannah Juana.

Eventually, Sierra Queens persistence paid off in the 69th minute when forward Kumba Zainab Brima was brought down in the Senegalese penalty area.

Boldly, the Sierra Leone team captain Fatmata J. Kamara stepped up and calmly converted the spot-kick, giving Sierra Leone the decisive lead.

Kamara's goal not only earned her the Player of the Match award but also sparked jubilant celebrations at the stadium and gave her team renewed momentum to control the remainder of the match.

Strongly, the Sierra Leone team held on firmly to secure a historic 1-0 victory and claim the prestigious 2025 WAFU A Women’s Championship title.

Without a doubt, Sierra Leone's famous win is a testament to the team’s unity, commitment, and resilience.

In addition to lifting their first-ever zonal trophy, Sierra Leone players also received individual accolades for their outstanding performances throughout the tournament.

Goalkeeper Hannah Juana, a standout throughout the competition, collected Best Goalkeeper and Player of the Tournament honors, having already secured three Player of the Match awards earlier in the tournament.

While Senegal finished as runners-up, Liberia claimed third place after defeating Mali earlier in the day.

Sierra Leone’s triumph in the 2025 WAFU A Women’s Cup marks a major milestone in the nation’s women’s football history and promises a bright future for the rising stars of the Sierra Queens.
