Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology (EBKUST), Sierra Leone’s third public university and led by Professor Edwin J.J. Momoh, has significantly strengthened its international engagement through a renewed collaboration with China’s Suzhou University of Science and Technology (SUST).

The partnership, first initiated in September 2024, marks a new chapter in EBKUST’s efforts to foster academic exchange, joint research initiatives, and faculty development.

The initial agreement between both universities were sealed in motion during EBKUST’s 2024 visit to China, where a delegation consisting of Dr. Joseph Davies, Dr. Maurice B. Kargbo, and Dr. Robert Kargbo laid the foundation for collaboration.

The EBKUST delegation did sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SUST, outlining shared objectives such as supporting EBKUST’s Open Distance Learning (ODL) program, facilitating staff and student exchanges, and launching joint research projects.

A year after the initial agreement, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of EBKUST, Reverend Professor Edwin J.J. Momoh led a follow-up delegation, including Dr. Joseph Davies, Mr. Mohamed Turay, and Dr. Jenner Bebeley to SUST recently.

During the September 15, 2025 visit, the EBKUST delegation reaffirmed their commitment towards their partnership with the Chinese institution, setting the tone for concrete steps to operationalize the partnership.

In accordance with the MoU, EBKUST plans to submit proposals to the Chinese Embassy in Freetown to establish short-term technical training programs aimed at enhancing the skills of faculty and staff, particularly in online and distance learning methodologies.

In addition, both universities agreed to jointly pursue Chinese research funding to support collaborative scientific and academic projects. SUST will also create opportunities for EBKUST students and staff, especially from the Faculty of Engineering, to pursue master’s and doctoral studies in China.

According to EBKUST's Public Relations Officer, Mr. Alimamy Larkoh, the evolving partnership signifies a major milestone for the university as it strives to expand its international network, elevate academic standards, and offer its students and staff valuable cross-cultural and academic exposure.

"Such collaborations are key to positioning EBKUST as a competitive and globally connected instititution," he ended.
