Morocco have been officially crowned champions of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following a dramatic and unprecedented ruling by the Confederation of African Football Appeals Board that overturned the outcome of the tournament’s final.
In a decision that has sent shockwaves across the football world, CAF invoked Article 84 of its competition regulations governing match forfeitures to determine that Senegal national football team forfeited the final against Morocco national football team.
As a result, the match has been officially recorded as a 3–0 victory in favour of Morocco, with the title awarded to the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF). The ruling effectively hands the North African side the AFCON crown without the final being decided on the pitch.
The decision marks one of the most controversial conclusions in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations, raising questions about disciplinary enforcement, tournament integrity, and the broader implications for African football governance.
While CAF has yet to release full details surrounding the circumstances that led to the forfeiture, sources indicate the case involved regulatory breaches serious enough to warrant the application of Article 84, an extreme measure rarely used at this stage of a major international competition.
For Senegal, the ruling represents a devastating blow. The reigning champions, who had been aiming to retain their continental title, now see their campaign end not in sporting defeat but in administrative sanction, an outcome likely to spark debate and possible further legal challenges.
For Morocco, however, the verdict delivers long-awaited continental glory, albeit under extraordinary circumstances. The triumph will be recorded in history, but the manner in which it was achieved is certain to remain a subject of intense scrutiny and discussion.
The CAF Appeals Board’s decision underscores the growing importance of regulatory compliance in modern football, where outcomes can hinge not only on performance on the field but also on adherence to rules off it.
As reactions pour in from across Africa and beyond, the 2025 AFCON will be remembered not for a final whistle, but for a ruling that redefined it.
