STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT OF SWASAL, SAHR MORRIS JR. ON INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY ON THE THEME: "GENDER EQUALITY TODAY FOR A SUSTAINABLE TOMORROW"
The international theme set out by the United Nations is "Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow". However, this theme is being popularized with a hashtag theme: "Breaking The Bias"(#BreakTheBias).
In all these considerations, SWASAL joins women of the World to celebrate their political, social, cultural and economic contributions in making the world a better place for us all.
Every year on March 8, the whole world gives itself time to reflect on gender equality; celebrate women's contributions and achievements in their various spheres of endeavours and safeguard their fundamental rights.
Rightly so, therefore, today's reflection is popularized by the hashtag "BreakTheBias as a way of ensuring the sustainability of gender equality in all spheres of interest of women around the world.
The world over celebrates every woman on this planet. Yes! Women always bring so much love and beauty into our world just by being a part of it, and it makes everyone happy.
It's Women's day! And the Sports Writers Association of Sierra Leone (SWASAL) joins the World not only to celebrate women but to celebrate the vibrant Female Sports Journalists who have become strong in their practices amidst the few challenges they face in executing their duties in reporting what they love best, sports!.
SWASAL is committed and will always be so in giving Female Sports Journalists equal opportunities, be it in capacity building and moral support because the association believes in their abilities in reporting sports and SWASAL as the umbrella body for sports journalism and reporting is committed to ensuring it's sustainability.
SWASAL has come a long way in putting this into fruition. In this regard, let me foremost pay tribute to the immediate past SWASAL President, Frank Magnus Ernest ‘Honest’ Cole with whom I served the association as Secretary General. During his reign, the association introduced a Female Representative in the SWASAL Executive, a stride which I have upheld as current President. To add to this beauty, the SWASAL Exceuitve today, can boast of two women serving in key Executive positions, first in the history of our beloved association.
SWASAL today has two women serving in my administration namely: Madam Magadeline Konneh as Female Representative and the Association's history-maker, and Madam Francess Bernard-Bundor as the first female Secretary General of the Association.
As SWASAL, we feel proud that one of our own vastly experienced and senior Female Sports journalists, Madam Zainab Joaque-Freeman is serving the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) as its Chief Electoral Commissioner.
At this juncture, let me also applaud Female Sports Journalist, Madam Hawa Dauda of Radio Mercury, Madam Jestina Sowa of Southern Region, Madam Esther Marie Samura and all other Female Sports Journalists across the country for their continuous relentlessness and diligence in executing their sports reporting that have in no small measure contributed in developing sports reporting and taking sports to the wider population of Sierra Leone.
Yes, sports journalism needs women and women need sports journalism. It is on this note I am encouraging those female journalists who are shying away from sports reporting to come on board and experience the beauty of sports reporting.
Together, let's promote "Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow".
Congratulations to the women of the world and the women of Sierra Leone on this special day.
Happy International Women’s Day!
God Bless our Female Sports Journalists!
God bless Sports Journalism!
God Bless SWASAL!
