Vlogging: A Virtual Market Space for Our Sierra Leonean youths

By: Amadu Wurie Jalloh What if I told you that Ghana and Nigeria are winning in the ongoing battle of rap supremacy between our own Hip-hop heavyweight and the rest of the OGs across Africa? Would you not be quick to jump into conclusion accusing me of betrayal unto a country fellow-- Kaodenero? Yes, you would.  Especially so when I am the same guy who was taunting him and his fans yesterday and unto today afternoon when I finally decided to forgive and forget his folly. We are starting fasting tomorrow, and we should forgive ans forget. I however want to tell you that this post is not about Kaodenero, or any of those rappers he's lyrically fighting with. Rather, this post is about our youths in general, but especially Sierra Leonean youths.  A few days ago I wrote a piece asking that people cheer up Kaodenero's project for both its market viability and the chance to promote the African culture and awake its people to a renaissance movement. Well, today again I want us to give ...

PART 2: BATTLED WITH EBOLA IN SIERRA LEONE; SURVIVING CORONA IN THE UK

How A Former Colonial Power And Its Ex-Colony Are Faring In COVID-19 Fight? By: Sheka Tarawalie (Shekito)  Apart from its extraordinarily high fatality toll and fast-paced infection rate worldwide, the coronavirus disease’s ability to strike at the very heart of government anywhere is conspicuously unprecedented.  UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is still convalescing at Chequers after a scary it-could-have-gone-either-way experience at the intensive care unit of London’s St. Thomas’ hospital. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s wife Sophie battled with COVID-19, forcing her husband to go into isolation.  Britain’s Deputy Ambassador to Hungary, Steven Dick, died from the disease at post. German Chancellor Angela Merkel had to go into self-isolation after her doctor tested positive. Flamboyant US Republican Senator Rand Paul caught – or was caught by – the virulent disease. Australia’s Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton tested positive.  In the Middle East, Iran’s Vice President Esh...

Al-Mahdi Apparel Technology Inc Donates Face Masks To SLAJ

The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) is pleased to receive a donation of 100 specially made face masks today from the Al-Mahdi Apparel Technology Inc as their humble support to the SLAJ ‘Wear A Mask’ campaign. According to the Chief Executive Officer of Al-Mahdi Apparel, Mr. Mahdi Kallon, the masks were produced with caution in line with the intended purpose and well packaged as a further protection from the virus. “This quantity may be small, but it’s the quality and fit for purpose that matters,” said Kallon, and called on the public not to use masks just for the sake of it but to use them properly with the intended purpose in mind always. Receiving the masks, the President of SLAJ Ahmed Sahid Nasralla, thanked CEO Kallon and his team for what he describes as a ‘timely gesture’, coming immediately after the Association launched the ‘Wear A Mask’ campaign. “On behalf of my Executive and the entire membership of SLAJ, I say thank you to Al-Mahdi Apparel Technology Inc. The Making of an Empire: Hip-hop King-Kongs across Africa Battling for Supremacy

By: Amadu Wurie Jalloh Say what you may, but I assure you the beef thing between and among our hip-hop King-Kongs are yielding a market  viability.  KaoLastingKingDenero, Sarkordi, Lyrical Joe, Khaligraphy Jones and all those entrapped in this lyrical tug-of-war game are  working on a big project: amalgamating the hip-hop industry and fanbase of Africa for their own good.  The diss and lyrical confrontations should be cheered up by fans across the continent. It is helping in widening the listenership of their lyrical proclivities and opening up an industrial space for hip-hop across Africa.  This gives a hope to musicians from smaller countries with small fan base compared to those of Nigeria and Ghana.  Gone are the days when the best selects of our nightclub DJs are Western Hip-hop and R&B songs.  Today, more than ever, African artists are touring across the continent. Their hustle is intensifying in the continent. Their followers on YouTube and other platforms are almost matchi...

Pikin Bizness Donates 50 Bags of Rice to Kroobay and Susan’s Bay

Inspired By SLAJ: It all started on the first day of the recent national three-day lockdown authorized by the Government of Sierra Leone to combat the spread of COVID-19 in the country, when AYV TV reporter Ransford Metzger interviewed the Chief of Kroo Bay live from the community. The Chief lamented that the community lacked hand washing buckets and food. The President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), Ahmed Sahid Nasralla, was at the AYV TV studios being interviewed by Amadu Lamrana Bah when Ransford’s report came in. Nasralla was touched by the cry of the Kroo Bay Chief, and so after his interview he swiftly moved to the community with his Secretary General, Mohamed Asmieu Bah, and donated 15 veronica buckets and bowls through the Chief and the Councilor and appealed to well-meaning individuals and organisations to come to the aid of Kroo Bay and other deprived and vulnerable communities in the country. Meanwhile, the Chairman Pikin Bizness, Adonis Abboud- who i...

Religious Heads are our Leaders too

By: AbdulRahman Barrie THEY NEED US: It has come to my attention that across the country and the globe, some Quranic teachers and Imams have been let go because the masjids don't have income to pay them their salaries. I strongly urge the members of ALL communities to make this issue public and don't be embarrassed about your low finances. Let forward the message to our various community members if the need be. Our Quranic teachers, or Imams, have dedicated their lives to the spiritual betterment of our community. Typically, the community is their main source of income (and also typically, he doesn't even have health insurance for his family). While it is understandable that the masjids accounts are low because people are not coming to masjids, and it is true that almost all of us are suffering, to (in effect) let go or neglect the Imam during this time is just not acceptable. The responsibility is on the Board members and on all community members to understand that the st...

A new dawn on religion: the preaching of the gospel has gone mobile

By: Ibrahim Jalloh - (Jallomy) ✍🏾 More than any other factor, the greatest and most debilitating invasion by the Corona virus is on religion and religious practices. The virus never questioned the doctrine, faith and overall philosophy of religion but perhaps the human interpretations and methods used in reaching out to the various congregations of religions across the world. You may note the hitherto unpardonable foibles and the rich paradox in the drive and direction of religion.  Religion mostly preached a life denying human existence to secure salvation and heaven.  The Bible is obvious in stating that wealth and riches are collosal barriers to salvation and the heavenly kingdom. The paradox, however, exist in the mad rush and incredible speed by the leaders of the multi faceted religious groups and groupings to secure and amass wealth.  Today, church offerings are a mandatory and conditioned behavior. In a given Sunday in known churches, the offerings/collections will take a maxi...
