The Deputy National Chairman of the All People's Congress (APC) Party, Ambassador Osman Foday Yansaneh, has defended his party's decision to retract their stance on non-political engagement in governance.
He defended his party during an interview with AWE-Media.SL (https://arwilsonsentertainment.blogspot.com) within the halls of parliament on Tuesday, after the swearing-in ceremony of the 52 other APC Members of Parliament into Sierra Leone's sixth parliament.
Mr. Yansaneh expressed that the APC's actions were justified and aimed at benefitting the country. "As a party, we have brought our elected Members of Parliament (MPs) to the forefront of parliament to fulfil their roles as representatives of the people," emphasized Mr. Yansaneh.
"There exists a social contract between the MPs and the constituents, with the district bulk system of representation being a significant aspect. The APC will ensure that the MPs prioritize the interests of the ordinary citizens of Sierra Leone.
“Let me also use this opportunity to address the international community's involvement in the matter saying it is important for our supporters to understand that the international community did not intervene to arbitrate, but rather focused on mediating between the conflicting parties for the best interest of Sierra Leone.
“However, I firmly believe that the people's mandates were stolen," expressed Mr. Yansaneh, reflecting his disappointment with the election results on June 24th.”
Nevertheless, the Deputy National Chairman acknowledged the need for the APC to concentrate on upholding all other aspects of the agreement signed between the party and the Government of Sierra Leone.
"I want to firmly reiterate that the APC's decision to change our previous position regarding participation in the governance processes was done in the best interest of our country, Sierra Leone," he concluded.
