Sierra Leone Basketball Federation Prepares for Inaugural National League

By: Joseph Adeshyllon Mansaray

The Sierra Leone Basketball Federation (SLBF) held its first official meeting yesterday to discuss the upcoming launch of the nation’s first-ever national basketball league.

Under the leadership of President Alie Hijazi and his executive team, the meeting highlighted a series of strategic initiatives aimed at developing basketball across the country and ensuring a successful start to the league, which is expected to begin in December.

One of the primary goals discussed was the reintroduction of basketball programs in schools and colleges. This initiative aims to identify and recruit young athletes capable of representing Sierra Leone in various competitive categories.

Additionally, the federation plans to organize capacity-building and training programs for coaches and referees to maintain professional standards within the league.

Before the league kicks off, SLBF will host an international gala competition, inviting teams from Liberia and Guinea to compete against local teams in Sierra Leone. This event is intended to foster regional camaraderie and build excitement ahead of the league’s launch.

To manage the league’s operations, the SLBF has established a dedicated committee board to oversee the organization and smooth running of this historic event. President Hijazi also shared positive updates on SLBF’s financial standing, announcing that FIBA has cleared outstanding debts owed by previous administrations.

This step opens up new opportunities for Sierra Leonean basketball, including participation in international matches and access to FIBA benefits.

The meeting brought together regional secretaries and coaches, signaling a unified commitment to advancing basketball in Sierra Leone.
