The Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AISPO), a prominent non-governmental organization dedicated to combating poverty, social injustice, and diseases affecting the most vulnerable populations in Sierra Leone and worldwide, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MoHS), has recognized 31 regular voluntary blood donors in Bombali district for their altruistic contributions to saving lives.
Among the honourees are Alhaji Osman Jalloh, who has donated blood 61 times, Martin Lamin Kotay with 55 donations, and Mohamed Lamin Bangura and Ibrahim Sorie Koroma, each with 54 donations. Additionally, 27 other donors have each contributed blood at least 18 times.
The awards were conferred during a special ceremony at the Makeni Wusum Stadium pavilion in Bombali district, Northern Sierra Leone, coinciding with the post-celebration of this year’s National Voluntary Blood Donors Day, which marks the 20th anniversary of World Blood Donor Day, a global event honouring the invaluable contributions of blood donors.
Each recipient received their award with great pride in the presence of esteemed health officials, including Dr. Mustapha Kabba, Deputy Chief Medical Officer of the Republic of Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Health and Sanitation, and Dr. Frederico Chiodi, representative of AISPO, among others.
Upon receiving their awards as the top 31 voluntary blood donors in Bombali District, recognized for their generous and courageous commitment to donating blood at no cost to save the lives of others, particularly pregnant women in Sierra Leone, the donors expressed their gratitude to AISPO and its partners.
Additionally, they encouraged others to participate in this life-saving initiative, reaffirmed their commitment to continue donating blood, and called for further support and motivation from the Ministry of Health and Sanitation and its partners.
In response to their appeal, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Mustapha Kabba, committed to actively advocating for the provision of special facilities for all voluntary blood donors within the healthcare system. He emphasized that these donors are not only true patriots of Sierra Leone but also essential contributors to the nation’s health transformation.
Furthermore, he highlighted that the government under President Julius Maada Bio remains resolute in its efforts to enhance and advance the country’s media sector.
Other speakers during the event also commended and congratulated the award recipients, urging more Sierra Leoneans to embrace the spirit of voluntary blood donation as a means to save lives.
