Date set for SLAJ Handing Over Ceremony

By: Alusine Rehme Wilson

After six years serving as the President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), Ahmed Sahid Nasralla will today pass the leadership baton to the newly elected President, Alhaji Manika Kamara.

This transition follows Kamara’s decisive victory on June 14 during the association’s 2025 elective congress held at the prestigious Bintumani Hotel in Aberdeen, Freetown.

According to SLAJ, the handover ceremony will commence at 4:00 PM at the distinguished Bintumani Hotel.

The anticipated event is expected to gather journalists from across Sierra Leone, along with prominent stakeholders, partners, and supporters of the media sector.

Undoubtedly, the handing over ceremony mark a vital moment as the association welcomes Alhaji Manika Kamara and other elected officials, who aim to build upon the solid foundations laid by previous SLAJ leaders.

Kamara has since said: "the incoming executive is committed to implementing their plans to foster the sustainable growth and development of Sierra Leone’s premier journalists’ body."

The seasoned, multi-award-winning journalist and dedicated servant of SLAJ, secured a landslide victory with 308 votes out of 461 valid ballots to defeat veteran journalist Mustapha M.K. Sesay on June 14.

Kamara's resounding win, earned widespread congratulations from his main contender and many others who see his leadership as a promising step forward for the organization.

While his election has been hailed as both a reward for his dedicated service and a fresh mandate to steer SLAJ into a new era, Kamara takes up his new role with wealth of experience from his previous roles as Assistant Secretary, Acting General Secretary, and Secretary General of SLAJ.

Meanhile Kamara’s ascendancy to the presidency is viewed by many as both well-deserved and strategically significant, his rise signifies a blend of proven commitment and a renewed mandate to advance the interests of Sierra Leone’s journalists.

Beyond doubts, today’s handing over ceremony not only symbolizes leadership transition but also enhances SLAJ’s reputation for upholding legality and promoting democratic principles.

The peaceful conduct of the 2025 SLAJ elections, the unity and professionalism displayed throughout the process highlight SLAJ's commitment to integrity and transparency, setting a positive tone for the organization’s future endeavors.
