Sierra Leone's reigning Premier League champions, East End Lions FC, are set to begin their 2025 CAF Champions League campaign today in Tunisia, facing off against US Monastir at the Hammadi Agrebi Stadium.
Today clash which will get underway at 13:00hrs, marks the start of the Sierra Leone soccer powerhouse club's continental journey, with a strong squad bolstered by foreign talents.
Leading the squad is Ghanaian defender Abdul Nyameke, who has been handed the captain’s armband for the campaign.
The Ghanian born defender was instrumental in East End Lions' domestic triumph in the 2024/25 season and now becomes part of a new wave of foreign players making their mark on the club.
Joining Nyameke are five other international recruits, namely Guineans Mohamed Cissé Koua (goalkeeper), Aliya Bangoura (defender), and Alhassane Doumbouya (midfielder), alongside Ivorians Sam Diallo (winger) and Ibrahim Sorie Dumbuya (midfielder). Together, these players have added depth and experience to the squad ahead of their toughest test yet.
Head coach Mohamed Lamin Kamara expressed confidence in his squad’s readiness during a pre-match interview with AWE Media Sierra Leone, saying, “The whole team, including myself, is very ready for our upcoming fixtures. We respect US Monastir. They are a good side with top players, but we are not here to be pushovers.”

Addressing concerns about injuries, Kamara clarified that there were no major setbacks in the squad, except for midfielder Sulaiman S. Kargbo, who is still recovering from a minor strain sustained during training.
Kamara, who led East End Lions to their record 13th league title last season and guided Sierra Leone’s U-20 team to the semi-finals of the 2025 U-20 AFCON, sees this CAF Champions League run as both a personal and national mission.
“As champions of our home league, our target is to at least reach the group stage. These preliminary matches are crucial. We want to go as far as possible and prove ourselves on the continental stage,” he said.
He called on fans and Sierra Leoneans around the world to rally behind the team: “We want our people back home to have faith in us. We’re here to make them proud.”
East End Lions will look to build momentum in Tunisia today, as they chase history in Africa’s most prestigious club competition.
