In a commendable show of their continued humanitarian support, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), an international medical charity, on Thursday, September 11, 2025 donated over €500,00 (five hundred Euros) worth of essential medical supplies and equipment to the Magburaka Government Hospital in Tonkolili District.
The donation, presented at MSF’s warehouse on Massokoh Line in Magburaka, marks the organization’s ongoing commitment to sustaining healthcare access in the region as it prepares to conclude its operations in Tonkolili by the end of September 2025.

The event was attended by key local stakeholders, including Tonkolili District Medical Officer Dr. Augustine Jimissa and Deputy Chairperson of the Tonkolili District Council, Mr. Alimamy Samuel Kamara.
MSF officials led Awoko Newspaper and other attendees on a guided tour of the donated supplies, which include over 2,000 boxes of gloves, syringes, malaria medication, dressings, injectable drugs, and nutritional items such as Plumpy’Nut for malnourished children.
During the tour, MSF's Supply Chain Officer, Mr. Claudius Bangura, highlighted the scale of the donation, emphasizing that the supplies are intended to support hospital operations for the next several months.

Speaking to Awoko Newspaper, MSF’s Project Coordinator in Magburaka, Melissa Perry, expressed gratitude to the people of Tonkolili for their years of collaboration
his donation is part of our transition process as we prepare to hand over operations to the local health authorities. Although MSF is exiting Tonkolili, we will continue our work in Kenema and remain ready to provide emergency response services across Sierra Leone,” she said.
In addition, she recounted that MSF has operated in Tonkolili District since 2016, focusing on maternal and child health, emergency care, and infectious disease treatment.

Undoubtedly, the global humanitarian organization has played a pivotal role in strengthening local health systems and improving healthcare accessibility in one of Sierra Leone’s underserved districts.
Receiving the donation, Mr. Alex Kanu, Medical Superintendent of Magburaka Government Hospital, commended MSF for its unwavering support. He assured that the supplies would be used responsibly and for their intended medical purposes.
District Medical Officer Dr. Jimissa and Deputy Council Chairperson Kamara echoed similar sentiments, lauding MSF’s contributions to public health in the region. “MSF has been instrumental in complementing government efforts to improve healthcare services. Their absence will be felt, but we are committed to sustaining their legacy,” said Kamara.

The event concluded with the official signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between MSF and the hospital, symbolizing the formal handover and end of a nearly decade-long partnership in Tonkolili.
MSF which now overs operated in 70 counties in the world over has been in Sierra Leone since 1986 and remains an essential player in the country’s health landscape, especially during outbreaks and emergencies.
Meanwhile, their next phase of operations will focus on maternal and child health programs in Kenema District, while maintaining readiness to respond to any future crises nationwide.
