"Always Morocco” - Hakim says after AFCON final heartbreak

By: Alusine Rehme Wilson

In the quiet aftermath of Morocco’s narrow 1–0 defeat to Senegal in the final of the 2025 CAF TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Achraf Hakimi chose reflection over regret.

The Atlas Lions’ captain, leading the host nation through a historic tournament, took to Instagram, where he commands a global following of more than 22.7 million, to share a deeply personal message of gratitude, pride, and unwavering belief in Morocco’s future.

After what he described as “very difficult days” spent absorbing the weight of the final loss, Hakimi said he felt compelled to speak “from the heart.” His message was not one of disappointment, but of appreciation, an emotional tribute to the people, institutions, and teammates who shaped Morocco’s AFCON journey.

Hakimi began by acknowledging His Majesty King Mohammed VI, crediting his vision and support for making the 2025 AFCON “undoubtedly the best in history.” Hosting the tournament, he said, was not just an organizational success but a statement of Morocco’s growing stature in African and world football.

He also praised Royal Moroccan Football Federation President Fouzi Lekjaa for his unwavering commitment to the national team and for believing in the players “every step of the way.” But the most heartfelt words were reserved for the Moroccan people.

“Thank you for being there for every game, every minute, every emotion,” Hakimi wrote, describing the fans as the team’s “twelfth man.” Whether inside Moroccan stadiums or across the global diaspora, he said the players felt that support when “legs were heavy and hearts were aching.”

Turning to the pitch, Hakimi paid tribute to head coach Walid Regragui, his technical staff, and his teammates, highlighting the collective sacrifice behind the campaign. He revealed that the squad spent 35 intense days together, days defined by discipline, unity, and relentless effort.

“This group showed the world that Morocco doesn’t just compete,” he wrote. “Morocco inspires.”

According to Hakimi, the 2025 AFCON has cemented Morocco’s status as a respected and admired football nation, one that mirrors a country moving forward with confidence and ambition. Every training session, match, and shared moment, he said, reflected values of respect, humility, and pride in representing the red and green.

While the final ended in heartbreak, Hakimi was clear that the journey is far from over. He described the experience as a “solid foundation for the future,” insisting that with unity, ambition, and the right mindset, there are no limits to what this generation of players can achieve.

“The future is built by what we plant today,” he concluded. "The future looks promising. Morocco will continue to move forward with its head held high.”

His final words summed up the spirit of a nation that dared to dream on home soil, and plans to dream even bigger. “Thank you for everything. Always Morocco.”

By: Alusine Rehme Wilson Claim: Soccer World HQ, in a Facebook post , claimed that Senegal is the first African team to beat England and the first to score three goals against them. Verdict: Partly True! Senegal is the first African team to beat England, but not the first to score three goals against them.
