In Makeni… NAS and Partners Commemorate World Aids Day

“From January to December this year, our test statistics shows that 13,143 Male and 14,049 Female in the North have been tested for HIV disease, 140 male and 224 female out of the population tested results showed positive and have also joined the 70,398 people that have benefited from the Anti-Retroviral Drugs (ARV)from various Health Centers in the country, exclusive of children that have also been tested some of whom are living positively with the disease while others are responding well to Anti-Retro-viral Drugs treatments. A District Health Management Staff revealed to attendees at the Makeni City Hall during the commemoration and celebration of the World Aids Day.


This year’s commemoration of the World Aids Day marks the 36th Anniversary of the day which is celebrated every year globally on December 1st.


In the Northern Region of Sierra Leone like other parts of the world, this year’s celebration stimulated several activities ranging from a football competition, flout parade, series of media sensitization prior to the d-day and it also brought together various Stakeholders, NGOs, CSOs and others who chatted on and made various statements related to ending the disease in the country with the Theme: “Community makes the difference to end HIV and AIDS by 2030”.

Several speakers spoke at the event including, the National Aids Secretariat, Mr. Mohamed Sisay, AHF-SL Program Coordinator, Madam Miatta Jambawai, the Deputy Chairman of Bombali District Council, John Yamba Kanu, the Makeni City Council Mayor, Sunkarie Kabba, Rofutha Development Association-(RoDA), CEO, Mr. Abdul Rashid Koroma and other partners of NAS. All of their statements spoke to the relevance of the event and how to mitigate, prevent and continue to sensitize others not to contact the disease.

These speakers also made strong Commitments to help end the virus in the country by 2030.

Giving his key note address at the event, Resident Minister North, Abu Abu Abdulai Koroma who represent the President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, His Excellency Retired Brigadier Julius Maada Bio said that: “I bring you greetings from the highest seat of the land, today I am here not to only represent the President, but to as well celebrate and deliver his key message to the people of the Northern Region on this auspicious day. As we are gathered here to commemorate and celebrate the 31st Anniversary of “World Aids Day” in the North, I want to assure you of government’s fullest support in the health sector leaving no one behind inclusive of persons living with HIV and AIDS, a very important category in society we should embrace and not discriminate at all”, said Resident Minister Koroma before he official launched the campaign on behalf of the president.

Makeni Medical Mission Brings Hope and Healing to Bombali District
