By: Alusine Rehme Wilson – (AR-WILSON)

The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Schools Education (MBSSE), Bombali District’s Physical and Health Education Department has confirmed 23 and 24 January 2020, as the dates to climaxed its much awaited Volleyball and Football finals for the 2019/2020 academic year.

Makeni Wusum mini stadium and the Headquarters of the 4th Brigade, Teko Barracks mini stadium has been confirmed as the two venues where the finals will be played from.  The Makeni Wusum mini stadium has an artificial turf and can seats about 10,000 spectators whilst the Teko Mini stadium has one amongst the best volleyball court in the district that can seats about 3,000 spectators.

On Thursday, 23rd January 2020, Saint Francis will open the campaign in the volleyball finals against the tournament’s top side, Sylvanus Municipal Secondary School in the Boys category at the 4th Infantry Brigade Headquarters, Teko Barracks mini stadium. Whilst Makeni Comprehensive Academy will battle it out with the Girls game against Sylvanus later at the same venue.

The much awaited football final for the Senior Secondary School will kick off at 4:30pm on Friday, January 24, between United Methodist (UMSS) and Saint Francis (The Parish Boys) where the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Schools Education, Deputy Director of Bombali District, Madam Agnes Kamara is expected to do the official match kickoff at the Makeni Wusum mini stadium alongside Bai Sheka Wurie, the Head of the Physical and Health Education Department at MBSSE and other stakeholders within and outside the educational sector.

A little over one hundred schools comprising of Primary, Junior and Secondary schools within Bombali District participated in this year’s school leagues.

In December last year, the MSSBE Bombali postponed the league finals until further notice and didn’t advance any reasons for the postponement.

However, Northern Times has learnt that, the school league finals which was postponed is as a result of “refusal and dalliance of the supply and the distribution processes of medals, trophies and other awards that were supposedly meant to be delivered to Education District offices across the country to help boost the schools leagues but unfortunately, these materials are still in the purview of the Ministry locked up in it stores at its headquarters in Freetown”.

Though the local office here has remained tight lipped on above, but has assured School Heads, PHE Teachers, sport lovers and other league followers that they are “assiduously working towards a grand braking wrap up in this year’s football and volleyball school leagues than ever before”.

Verdict: Partly True! Senegal is the first African team to beat England, but not the first to score three goals against them. Full Text The England senior men’s national football team, nicknamed the “Three Lions,” played their first match against Scotland in 1872. That match ended goalless but marked the beginning of an intense soccer rivalry between both nations, dubbed the “Auld Enemy.” Since 1872-2025, the England national team has achieved its 1000-game milestone in November 2019 when they played Montenegro at the Wembley Stadium. England's all-time head-to-head record shows that they’ve played a whopping 1072 matches against 100 countries, won 615 games, drew 255, and lost 200. Senegal, on the other hand, is one of Africa’s most famous football nations, nicknamed the “Lions of Teranga.” In 2002, ...

Sierra Leone, Two other Nations disqualified from AFCON 2024 U17 Qualifiers

By: Abdulrahman Barrie The U17 football teams from Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Guinea Bissau have been disqualified from the 2024 U17 African Cup of Nations competition in Senegal after failing the mandatory MRI test scans. These scans, which determine the age of the players, revealed discrepancies that led to their removal from the tournament. The disqualification follows changes to Article 27.4 of the U17 Africa Cup of Nations regulations, which have tightened the criteria and enforcement of age verification measures. The updated rules stipulate that if a team has more than four players deemed ineligible after the MRI eligibility test, the entire team will be disqualified. The MRI tests, used to enforce age restrictions in youth competitions, are crucial for ensuring fairness. Unfortunately, the teams from these three nations did not meet the age criteria, resulting in their disqualification. This decision has come as a significant disappointment for the young players and their fans, w...
