Sierra Leone - Men’s Top-tiers in high gears for 34th Premier League Season

With records set to emerge in the Sierra Leone’s 2020/2021 men’s elite league commencing tomorrow (Friday, 23rd April, 2021) CAFOnline takes a tour on all 18-team League openers ahead of the commencement of the 34th season of the Sierra Leone Premier League. 

Newly promoted side, Sierra Leone Police are already showing readiness to enter into the maiden 18-team championship as they’ve announced former East End Tigers trainer Victoria Conteh as their Head coach. Conteh was announced on Monday as the club's new coach after patting ways with her former club following her appointment Head coach of Sierra Leone’s National U-20 Female side. She remained the first and only female in Sierra Leone to lead a Men’s elite club and will have no pity in their Friday Opener against her former club East End Tigers.

East End Tigers, the Yellow Submarines as nicked will play without out their prolific striker Baimba Sesay whom they’ve released to FC Kallon but will be banking on some of the sensational new names they have signed from top second division sides to make their mark in the maiden 18-team championship.

Mount Aureol SLIFA boasts as the only club to have announced a long list of eighteen newly signed players including experienced Sierra Leone International right-back and former Lebanon Al-Saida defender Mohamed Fofanah who is tipped to skipped the new comers who rally’s the 2018/2019 League table bottom rockers Anti Drugs Strikers on Friday at the Approved school in Freetown. 

FC Kallon are the 2019 League runners up and Challenge Cup defending Champions said they have no worries playing without some of their key players namely Hassan Millah Koroma, Emmanuel Samadia, Momoh Lapo Dumbuya plying their careers elsewhere at both international and national stages. In-fact the club suspended one of top notch player Masalkie Bangura for breaching team rules. 

The team will bank on former Ports Authority Talisman Julis Goba for their Friday evening encounter at the Siaka Stevens Stadium in Freetown as they meet Port Authority, one time Sierra Leone representative in the 1974 African Clubs Champions cup.

Old Edwardians were constant at 6th position last season said they will spark surprises in this season’s championship and their Saturday opener against Freetown City FC at the Attouga stadium in Freetown is no exception to their winning plan.

Nine-time Sierra Leone Premier League winners East End Lions who won the 2019 Championship unbeaten has unveiled former Sierra Leone International Forward, Abu Bakarr Kanu fondly called Gbanaloko as Assistant coach II plus registered players including young sensational forward Momoh Lopo Dumbuya, their latest signed from FC Kallon who arrives after the departure of their inform forward Musa Noah Kamara to Bo Rangers in a record breaking transfer deal worth $225,000. Bo Rangers (the big money spenders) were leading the park last season with 23 points before the entire league season was called off due to Corona-virus. Both sides meet in a crunch tie next Saturday.

Championship returnees Bai Bureh Warriors are all set to announce their return when they battle the 2001 League champions Mighty Blackpool on Sunday in Port Loko. 

The game will attracts huge interests from the sports followers with Mighty Blackpool being the first and only Sierra Leone club to have reached the quarter final stage of the champion clubs competition so far.

Head coach Abdulrahman Turay of Wusum Stars who relegated in 2012, said their return means they are aiming to reach the championship’s highest heights, and they will have that to prove on Sunday evening at the Wusum stadium in Makeni when they play against the Republic of Sierra Leone Arm Force.

Traditional provincial giants Kamboi Eagles ended their 2018/2019 League campaign on 3rd-place with 35 points behind FC Kallon and East End Lions and came close to emerge runners up of last season’s championship after securing 21 points from 12 league games before the season was annulled, the Eastern region based club will have a chance to prove what they have got when they battle FC Johansen on Sunday at the Bo Stadium.

On the other hand Diamond Stars were 10th with 26 points after five wins, eleven draws and did lost eight of their 24 League games but started picking shape last season after finishing third with 20 points from 13 games before the season was annulled. The Diamond rich men will enter into their first league match this season against Central Parade on Sunday, 25th April, 2021 at the Kono stadium in Eastern region of Sierra Leone.
