Sierra Leone’s August 10 Insurrection Hearing-impaired suspect remains in detention

The Sierra Leone Police has confirmed that an unidentified hearing impaired woman who was arrested in Makeni on August 10 during the irate civilians protest is still in their custody at the headquarters of the Criminal Investigations Department in Freetown.

Police say the hearing impaired women from Makeni remain in their custody because “she’s yet to be identified by any of her relatives from Makeni where she was arrested, and that they’re looking forward to receiving any relative of love one of the suspects to grant her bail.”

So far, the surname of the hearing impaired suspect who says her first name is Musu is yet known because she has not disclosed it to us,” said Police Constable Kamara Fatu, a sign interpreter facilitator for deaf people in the Sierra Leone Police in an interview with AWE-Media.SL.

The police sign interpreter further recalled that she was called to the Police headquarters, Criminal Investigations Department in Freetown to interpret questioning of the suspect from Makeni who was arrested together with others, over allegations of obstruction, riotous conduct and other related offenses.

And, “it was during the police interrogation, that the suspect revealed her first name as Musu but although she was unable to tell her surname, she additionally told us that she is a trader, who was out for routine petty trading on some main streets of Makeni city on August 10, when she eventually fell in police hands together with others that are all hearing-paired and were immediately transferred to the police headquarters in Freetown for further questioning. 

“She will be granted bail I believe if any of her relatives or loved ones will show up to identify her,” she ended.

When speaking to AWE-Media.SL in Makeni, Abdulrahman Barrie, the President of the Bombali Deaf Development Association said he did not know the suspect but acknowledged he’s aware that the woman is still in detention at the police headquarters in Freetown after she was arrested in Makeni on August 10, 2022 during the bloody citizens insurrections as the only hearing-impaired nationwide that was arrested on the day nation.

“I’m really pained by her arrest and detention but from correspondences I’ve had with the Police, I can confirm that she is safe and only awaits a family member to identify her and seeks for her immediate release, this is why I’m calling on members of the public to help us pass her detention information as we continue the search for her relatives,” the BDDA President pleaded.
