Some petty traders, along with bar and night club owners in Makeni, are voicing their concerns regarding the power outage that has affected their city and surrounding areas.
The outage, caused by the ongoing maintenance of the Bumbuna Hydro Dam, which serves as the main source of electricity for Makeni, Magburaka, and other towns nationwide, has severely impacted their businesses.
Trading activities and entertainment venues have been severely affected by the lack of power.
Memuna Kargbo, who used to sell cold water and drinks at the main Makeni lorry park, explained how the power outages have forced her and some of her colleagues to close their businesses, resulting in financial struggles.
In addition to the loss of income, petty traders in the north-eastern city of Makeni are also facing challenges in affording their daily meals and are unable to make their usual savings through their trades.
The Electricity Distribution Authority (EDSA) has previously implemented power rationing during maintenance work at the Bumbuna Hydro Dam, but this time the outage is lasting for a longer period until May 23.
This extended outage is causing significant distress to business owners and employees, like Madam Jalikatu Mansaray, who had to temporarily cease operations at her entertainment center. The uncertainty of when power will be restored has left many wondering about the future of their livelihoods.
The impact of the ongoing maintenance on the electricity grid in the North is not limited to petty traders and entertainment staff, it's also affecting the entire community.
However, EDSA has acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the 10-day outage and has promised to provide a stable and reliable electricity supply once the maintenance is completed on May 23.
Despite the challenges faced by businesses and individuals during this period, there is hope for a brighter future once the power supply is restored.
