Sport For Empowerment Foundation: Driving Community Transformation Through Sport in Freetown

The Sport For Empowerment Foundation, in collaboration with Friends In Sport Academy, is making remarkable progress in changing lives through its Community Social Change Program in the vibrant Vincent Drive Lumbly area of Freetown.

Over the past five years, the foundation has harnessed the profound potential of sport as a catalyst for transformation, delivering well-structured training programs and invaluable educational opportunities for children and youth throughout the region.

What began as a humble grassroots initiative has evolved into a robust community development effort. Today, the foundation proudly operates a fully established school that caters to students from nursery through senior secondary levels, providing essential education to families in and around the Kamayama community.

This educational institution has consistently produced outstanding results in both public and internal examinations, reflecting the comprehensive support that nurtures students academically and personally.

Beyond academics, the foundation’s contributions to athletic development are equally noteworthy. Young athletes have taken part in a variety of grassroots football competitions across Freetown, showcasing their talents and passion for the sport.

A number of these dedicated youths have earned positions on the Sierra Leone U-15 and youth national teams, representing their nation with pride and ambition.

Notably, several talented girls, mentored through the program, are now making their mark in the Sierra Leone Female Premier League, breaking barriers and inspiring the next generation of female sports stars in the country.

Moreover, many alumni of the program are now pursuing higher education, equipping themselves with the knowledge and skills necessary for meaningful careers and impactful leadership roles in society. Their journeys reflect the foundation’s commitment to fostering not only athletes but also well-rounded individuals ready to contribute positively to their communities.

This inspiring narrative of change would not be possible without the tireless dedication of the team on the ground in Sierra Leone and the ongoing support from partners and well-wishers who share a belief in sport as a powerful tool for empowerment.

The Sport For Empowerment Foundation remains steadfast in its mission to expand its influence and deepen its impact, one child, one coach, and one community at a time, transforming lives through the universal love of sport.

By: Abdulrahman Barrie The U17 football teams from Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Guinea Bissau have been disqualified from the 2024 U17 African Cup of Nations competition in Senegal after failing the mandatory MRI test scans. These scans, which determine the age of the players, revealed discrepancies that led to their removal from the tournament. The disqualification follows changes to Article 27.4 of the U17 Africa Cup of Nations regulations, which have tightened the criteria and enforcement of age verification measures. The updated rules stipulate that if a team has more than four players deemed ineligible after the MRI eligibility test, the entire team will be disqualified. The MRI tests, used to enforce age restrictions in youth competitions, are crucial for ensuring fairness. Unfortunately, the teams from these three nations did not meet the age criteria, resulting in their disqualification. This decision has come as a significant disappointment for the young players and their fans, w...
