Statistics Sierra Leone (SSL) has intensified its community sensitisation campaign on the ongoing cartographic mapping exercise, a crucial first step toward the country's upcoming 2026 Population and Housing Census.
On Sunday, October 19, 2025, the Northern Regional Publicity Officer for Statistics Sierra Leone, Alusine Rehme Wilson, led a mobile awareness campaign across key areas of Makeni using a loud-hailer vehicle provided by management in line with the Communication and Public Relations Directorate publicity frame work.
The campaign which is scheduled to run for 16 days, two days each within eight weeks, aimed to educate residents on the purpose and importance of the mapping process currently underway in the northern districts of Bombali, Falaba, Koinadugu, and Tonkolili.

The loud-hailer vehicle moved strategically through high-traffic locations such as the MCA Area, Station Road, Kamal Street, Mena Junction, Old Mabanta Road, Gada Lane, NP Lorry Park, Frontier Road, New London, Koya Street, Magburaka Road, and Lower and Upper John Streets, among others.
Throughout the route, the catographic mapping krio version jingle message developed by the Communications and Public Relations Directorate played continuously, explaining the role of cartographic mapping in the census process.
Between stops, I engaged directly with residents, clarifying that the mapping work is essential for ensuring that every community is included in the 2026 Census.
I pinpoint that the ongoing catographic mapping exercise will helps Statistics Sierra Leone to accurately locate all households and settlements, enabling comprehensive data collection in the upcoming nationwide enumeration.
I concluded that, the ongoing mapping process is desired by management of Statistics Sierra Leone to ensure that, "no community is left out and that every Sierra Leonean will be accurately counted. It lays the foundation for a successful census."
Largely, community response was positive, with many residents expressing appreciation for the awareness efforts.
In areas where mapping is still underway, locals assured they would cooperate with the field staff conducting the exercise.

The public sensitisation campaign is set to continue on Monday, October 20, with more engagements planned across Makeni and other northern communities.
The ongoing cartographic mapping is a key part of Statistics Sierra Leone's preparation for the 2026 Census, being carried out in collaboration with national and international partners such as the Government of Sierra Leone, UNFPA and Irish Aid, to ensure transparency, inclusiveness, and accuracy in the data collection process.
