❗EPA Wrap-up Stakeholders Engagement Workshop in Bombali District...

Environment Protection Agency and partners on Thursday 14th, March 2019 at the Makeni City Council Multipurpose Hall has engaged Stakeholders in a day’s workshop as part of the Agency’s nationwide tours to Develop a National Action Plan for Mercury Reduction and Sustainable Development for Sierra Leone in Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining Sector.

The day’s dialogue brought together various individuals from mining and non mining areas that all deliberated meaningfully on the subject and thus stated challenges they are facing in Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining and their communities.

According to an EPA staff, who also double as Chairman Implementation and Compliance Committee of the Minamata Convention on Mercury and National Coordinator of the project Mohamed Abdulai Kamara the Stakeholders Engagement Workshop is in line with EPA’s commitment to ensure that Sierra Leoneans go by the recommendations of the Minamata Convention on Mercury that will prevent Mercury effects on the people of Sierra Leone.

He concluded with a clarion call for support from all towards the Environment Protection Agency to embrace practices that will not pollute their communities.

Like Mohamed Abdulai Kamara, UNITAR’s Jorden De Haan addressing pressmen also said that he is looking forward to support from the people of Sierra Leone especially those that are residing in  Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining Communities to beware of Mercury and its effects for the good of maintaining a healthy atmosphere that is devoid of Mercury effects.
