Rugby a contact team sport game that originates from England in the first half of 19th remains to be one of the most expensive sporting disciplines in the world.

This game has in recent times reached the shores of Sierra Leone in the early 20’s. Since 2010, Rugby has been a house hold sporting game in the country precisely in the Northern Region where a team of Teenagers has once represented the Green, White and Blue and duly bagged home the maiden Champion’s trophy from an International Rugby Championship that was hosted in England.

The Northern Region Rugby Association since then to date has been working tirelessly to popularize the game in Makeni, its surrounding and beyond with regular training sessions and participating at both National and International Rugby Tournaments.

Undoubtedly, the Northern Region from comparative assessments is second to none as per Rugby glory track records in the country. They have victoriously stood out to be the leading region that has both Male and Female Rugby Teams.

About a week ago, both Female and Male Rugby Players from the North-West and North-East Rugby Teams showed their class at a one day Rugby Competition hosted at the Makeni Wusum Stadium courtesy of the Northern Region Rugby Association.

It was a win for the North-East Female team over the North-West female team while the North West Male team defeated the North East Male team with impressive two tries made by Sillah M. Bangura which made him the man of the moment with the highest number of try overall in the male match.

Giving an overview of the one day competition to Northern Times, the Competition’s Coordinator; Alex Kapotho Kamara, who also doubled as the Head Coach for the Northern Region Rugby Team said that the competition they organized is under trial times and stiff financial strength but they were able to lobby from few Philanthropists that have love for the game that tipped them a little financially.

He emphasized that getting support from stakeholders and other well to do individuals for Rugby activities is always challenging but what keeps him and the Players going is the attention the sport is gaining gradually in the region and its good name it has acquired from other regions which are all inline with the five core values of Rugby they as Rugby Officials and Players should uphold and maintain at all times for the good of the sport they cherish and play.

Going further, Coach Kapotho described the one day competition as a very loud achievement in the Rugby history of the region and the country at large, he commended all the participating teams from the two sister regions for showing their class in front of spectators which includes their love ones, family members, Sport Administrators, Journalists, friends and all present at the games.

“I am therefore, urging everyone to note that Rugby is a fine sport that can keep the body healthy and it has a higher tendency of making ways for players to explore shores of other countries, which are all reasons well wishers and stakeholders should invest in it.” Alex Kapotho Kamara revealed.

England's all-time head-to-head record shows that they’ve played a whopping 1072 matches against 100 countries, won 615 games, drew 255, and lost 200. Sierra Leone, Two other Nations disqualified from AFCON 2024 U17 Qualifiers

By: Abdulrahman Barrie The U17 football teams from Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Guinea Bissau have been disqualified from the 2024 U17 African Cup of Nations competition in Senegal after failing the mandatory MRI test scans. These scans, which determine the age of the players, revealed discrepancies that led to their removal from the tournament. The disqualification follows changes to Article 27.4 of the U17 Africa Cup of Nations regulations, which have tightened the criteria and enforcement of age verification measures. The updated rules stipulate that if a team has more than four players deemed ineligible after the MRI eligibility test, the entire team will be disqualified. The MRI tests, used to enforce age restrictions in youth competitions, are crucial for ensuring fairness. Unfortunately, the teams from these three nations did not meet the age criteria, resulting in their disqualification. This decision has come as a significant disappointment for the young players and their fans, w...
