SLPP runs the risk of political fragmentation in Bombali District

The political marriage between Paopa and the Alpha Timbo squad in Bombali District is at low ebb with a very obvious risk of disintegration if immediate corrective measures are not taken by the overall leadership of the party. Supporters of Alpha Timbo are accusing the Resident Minister North East, Hon. Abu Abu Koroma, of sidelining them in most governance activities and at the same time abandoned them in the wilderness. It was also revealed to this medium that the Resident Minister has deliberately refused to visit the party office because he perceived the office as being over populated by Alpha Timbo sympathizers. Attempted efforts at resolving this politically undesirable state has proven futile. The unfinished Roads in Makeni City: the sin of local leadership failure

By: Ibrahim Jalloh – ( Jallomy ) National development does not exist in a vacuum. As a matter of fact, development is an absolute outcome of a set of activities and clearly defined objectives. Good roads are a catalyst to visible and sustainable development. The previous government of former president Koroma noted the absolute need for revamping the urban road infrastructure and with the tax proceeds from the defunct African Minerals Limited, a near fair spread of allocation of roads for reconstruction across the country was made. The Makeni City allocation was nationally judged to be on the upper limit for obvious and understandable reasons but the reality of the implementation and completion of allocated roads to Makeni city is painful and outrightly regrettable. The reasons were intriguing and heavily questioned the integrity of purpose.  The roaring beast of selfishness eclipsed the expected push for the common good. The story is not behind the arras. For the Makeni ...

My Choice and My Values: Episode Two

By: Abu Bakarr Kamara (De Sierra Phoenix) I returned home, lying down on my bed to take a nap. But my eyes were dried and my mind was awake like energized electrons. I was ruminating on Madam Tessy's actions. Not too long, she hemmed and hawed me with a call. "Do you know what you stand to loose or gain? I want to change your life and make you shine among colleagues of your age. You're such a handsome man. All I need is you. I want that manly hot blood in your veins to stabilize and melt my frozen-emotions. Are you bright upstairs? Do you want to live a piteous life? No! I guess you don't want to. Because you are a brilliant guy and you must be sharp up there. Think about it!" She said to me and cut the call. Being at home, made my situation worse everyday. I evaluated the situation. Here's my family that had started appreciating me for the first time. I also had daily needs to do away with. For the four to five months, life was so good rendering service to ...

Mohamed Marrah: the Goal Keeper hard to beat in Makeni

My Choice and My Values

Episode One : By: Abu Bakarr Kamara (De Luminary Sierra Phoenix) I had just completed my Bachelor's Degree in Mass Communication. Roaming around the street with no job to lean on for survival. As a young grad, from typical African home, the family now look forward to my support. This is without even considering the booby trap in society to gaining control of a lucrative job. I was pissed off. The atmosphere in my house couldn't favor my stay even for an hour during daytime. Imagine father had to call me a lazy boy, with not much meat on my bones. Momma will shout at me with insults, saying I'm a disappointment to the family. So being a songwriter, a poet and a guitarist, I had to hit the studio everyday from 8am to 9pm. That's the only way I was earning pocket money to meet my immediate needs; until when the studio manager sent me to deliver a letter to a nearby bar and restaurant. I took the letter along with my guitar. In my fresh looks and well curled dreadlocks,...

REPEALING CRIMINAL LIBEL LAW IN SIERRA LEONE: THE APPROACH AND OUTCOME

By: Francis Sowa A bill entitled ‘The Public Order (Amendment) Act, 2019’ has been gazetted. It seeks to “amend the Public Order Act, 1965 (Act No. 46 of 1965) by repealing Part V which deals with defamatory and seditious libel and to provide for other related matters.’ This followed Cabinet’s approval to repeal same. The next destination in the repeal process is Parliament. A bit of history: The Public Order Bill was introduced in Parliament in 1965 by Sir Albert Margai, the second Prime Minister of Sierra Leone. He apparently influenced parliament to enact a law that would serve as a sledge hammer to silent his critics and members of the opposition. Parliament, nonetheless, enacted the Bill despite the serious opposition (Kamara, J, 2007). The 1965 Public Order Act (a substantial extraction from the U.K Libel Act 1843 when it existed) is widely considered to be draconian and out of tune with the tenets of fundamental human rights. The fact that journal...
