The redistricting and dealmalgation of chiefdoms in Sierra Leone addressed a historic question and closed a historic gap.

Amidst political tension and traditional stampede, the previous government of Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma was wholesomely forthright in addressing the historic wrongs associated with the amalgamation of chiefdoms in Sierra Leone.

The outcome of the redistricting and de-amalgamation program additionally deepened and gave relevance to the decentralization process in Sierra Leone
Administrative challenges are, however, emerging around the location of the district Headquarters of the resuscitated districts.

Karene district is not new but a resuscitated administrative entity. Similarly, Falaba district e existed before it was clamped down by the Colonial Masters.

Notwithstanding the political good will in redistricting and de-amalgamation of these local entities, few obvious and disturbing gaps have emerged.

Relocating the resuscitated district Headquarters to new geographic areas has attracted sharp criticism and a call for a political rethink.

The loudest political call is coming from Karene district and that is returning the Karene district Headquarters to Batkanu.

The benefits for this are great and can find expression in the strategic location of Batkanu, the ready access to the capital city of Freetown, the Regional Headquarters of Port Loko and, of course; the sister regional Headquarters of Makeni.

The spirit of politics is hovering above this great and historic call as is always the case in Sierra Leone. This is not an attempt to undo the glorious attempt of the previous government but to deepen and add meaning to those efforts for greater national gains.
We do hope that this timely call will find a comfortable space in the New Direction.
