By: Alusine Rehme Wilson (AR-WILSON)✍️

After the long political walk by political parties in the 2018 March 7-April electioneering process, the Makeni City Council has on Friday, May 25, 2018 at the Makeni city council hall held its first inaugural meeting and deputy mayor election between Councilor Fatmata Tutu Sesay and councilor Brima Santigie Mansaray in the watchful eyes of stakeholders, council staffs, media men and Makenians under the leadership of Mayor Sunkarie Kamara in her second term of office as mayor of the municipality.

The chief administrator of the Makeni city council William Alpha as per the Standing Orders and in consonance of the 2004 Local Government act chaired the meeting and successfully presided over the deputy mayor election in a very peaceful, transparent, fair and conducive atmosphere.

Confirmation of the meeting’s agenda, signing of oath register by the mayor and the fourteen councilors, and reading of laws governing the electioneering process for the deputy mayor by MCC-CA William Alpha.

Clarifications and questions were accepted from the councilors, endorsement and submission of relevant document in line with section (6) of the local government act of 2004 by the two nominated aspirants.
Statements were allowed from the two aspirants and voting was then done by the 14 councilors in a very free, fair, and credible manner.

The Chief Administrator of the MCC then declared from the elections results, Councilor Santigie Brima Mansaray as Deputy Mayor elect of the council after securing eight votes cast in his favor over councilor Fatmata Tutu Sesay who thrilled by six votes.
The election was a very tense and competitive one between the two aspirants proved to be very friendly and peaceful and the aspirants and councilors were all well behaved throughout the electioneering process.
All at the event accepted the elections results and applauded the Makeni city council and staffs for a successful and fair conduct of the deputy mayor’s election.

Delivering the vote of thanks at the end of the occasion was mayor Sunkarie Kamara who firstly began her speech by congratulating the new deputy mayor elect of the council assuring him of her readiness to work with him and all councilors and citizens of the municipality for the betterment of the municipality noting  ”Mr. Deputy Mayor, Paramount Chief of Bombali Shebora Chiefdom, Dignitaries and all, to you councilor Tutu I want to say you didn’t won the election but you are not a loser, all she highlighted in her speech was true so keep it up, never give up all is not lost to you Brima Mansaray, I say Congratulation, and I want to assure you that: the office you are about to occupy now is a hot seat and I don’t want people to misunderstand that office, my chief administrator can attest to that, I give a hard kick on the back… If I want it done? It should be done and its not about just occupying the designation because if I as a woman can go to the wilderness to get it for the councilor you should not be and exception to work extra to develop our council for we are in opposition, to the audience we need your support to help the councilor grow continually but not mere crying down statements from you. It was so absurd for me to learn that people were so furious over the renaming of just two streets in the municipality but I am done with that but please make your suggestions for we are not perfect at all times perhaps your contributions can create the difference and this Makeni city council and it developments lies in all our hands so I want to say a very big thank you to you all for attending our first council meeting I wish you all a safe journey to your homes as you return”  she narrated.
