Ending Away Supporters Drought for Leone Stars… WAFA on the Right Trajectory

By: Alusine Rehme Wilson – (AR-Wilson)
One amongst the hugest challenge that has been affecting the Sierra Leone National Team (Leone Stars) in away matches in one way or the other over the years is lack of enough supporters at such games.

The Western Area Football Association– (WAFA) in collaboration with other partners is working positive behind the drops towards ending this age long deficiency on the September 4, 2019 away game of Sierra Leone to the Lone Stars of Liberia in the 2020 Preliminary World Cup qualifying which is expected to be played in the Liberians’ Samuel K. Doe Stadium.

David Turner, WAFA’s Head of Media and Communications in an exclusive interview with northern times said that: WAFA the largest regional football body in the country is hyper charged to complimenting the efforts of the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) by ensuring that they provide a cost recovery scheme for a an expected 2000 Supporters of Leone Stars to be able to watch live at the Samuel K. Doe Stadium in Liberia the Liberia Vs Sierra Leone match.

Turner explained that the scheme is primarily set up to seek the interest of all and sundry who are intending to pave their ways to Liberia for the game, to worry not much anymore, but to only subscribe the any of the three already designed WAFA cost recovery packages on prices ranging from Six Million Three Hundred Thousand Leones (Le 6,300,000) on air economic class, Two Million Three Hundred Thousand Leones (Le 2,300,000) by a bus on road first class, and One Million Seven Hundred Thousand Leones (Le 1,700,000) second class by bus on road respectively, as round trip fare, one Leone Stars Supporter Jersey, full course meal, accommodation for two nights, match ticket, and internal transportation to be fully covered by subscribers of any of the prices as stated by WAFA.

When asked about the trip’s packages safety and benefits to the nation, David replied that: “all of the three packages are very safe my brother. WAFA has a repetition to protect. Thus, we have ensured that our supporters’ security and safety are guaranteed. And as a nation this innovation from us WAFA as a body will benefit the nation for its supporters to witness a world cup match qualifier that will motivate the players to bring victory home.”

In a blanket call, David Turner urged all supporters to take advantage of this first of a kind opportunity WAFA is premiering in the country.

From forensic audits carried out by this writer on the trend at which this WAFA scheme is moving along with sports followers has it that despite the current crippling economic nature of Sierra Leone, some supporters of Leone Stars have subscribed to the scheme  already.

Nevertheless, it seems as the words of the SLFA Secretary General, Christopher Kamara to Pressmen for: “the entire football family to put all their individual differences aside and come on board to support the FA in raising the country’s football flag higher than ever” that was said few months ago is coming into reality”.

This is welcoming and it will seemingly end the shock of loosing matches as a result of lack of fans support as was experienced in the 2010 world cup qualifiers and in the Ivory Coast versus Sierra Leone AFCON qualifiers final group game that was played on 3rd Sept 2016 in the Bouake Stadium but will pave way for smiles of victory to rise on the faces of Sierra Leoneans and Leone Stars supports like others did in 1996 Africa Cup of Nations.
